What is nutrigenomics?

Nutrigenomics is the study of how foods affect our genes and how individual genetic differences can affect the way we respond to nutrients (and other naturally occurring compounds) in the foods we eat. myDNA provides you with information related to how your genes influence your response to diet.

What scientific evidence exists for nutrigenomics?

The completion of the Human Genome Project in 2003 led to the development of Nutrigenomics. The Human Genome Project was a 13-year international collaborative research programme with participation by over 200 scientists and at the cost of US $2.7 billion. Its goal was to discover all the 20,000-25,000 human genes.

 

With this information, scientists now have access to the specifics of how DNA works in the body. Since then, the study of Nutrigenomics has followed the meteoric rise of all kinds of genetic research, with thousands of high quality research studies led by top scientists and professors.

 

Your myDNA results and recommendations are based on the highest calibre studies with validated, demonstrable statistical effects. Importantly, behind each interpretation and recommendation is a team of scientists and registered dietitians.

What nutrigenomics is NOT

Nutrigenomics is not a diagnosis of health conditions or disease risk. It is not used to calculate one’s risk of developing diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer.

 

Nutrigenomics instead focuses on providing you with actionable results related to your genes and diet. For example, based on the FTO gene, also known as obesity gene, we can tell you if you are more likely than normal to be obese. This knowledge would then allow you to make changes to your appetite and diet.

What’s the relationship between fitness and genetics?

Just as genes influence the way you respond to diet, your genes also play a role in your fitness potential and in how well you might perform with different types of exercise. In the same way that nutrigenomics can help us provide you with recommendations to achieve better health, genetics can also help us personalize fitness recommendations based on the type of exercise and sport that you are likely to respond best to.

Are there other factors that can influence my health besides genetics?

Yes, there are multiple factors involved. Your health is a combination of both genetic and non-genetic factors such as your lifestyle and environment. This is great news because you can change the non-genetic factors to manage your health more effectively. That’s why myDNA is so important in helping you achieve optimal health because it looks at how genetic factors influence your diet and fitness. Together with your lifestyle and environmental factors, this information puts you in control of your health.

Where do I send myDNA sample?

The myDNA Collection Kit comes with a prepaid SF Express courier consignment note and a return envelope. All you need to do is place the return tube into the return envelope, fill in your information on the pre-paid SF Express courier consignment note, and call SF Express at 1-800-18-3331. Press [1] for English or Bahasa, [2] for Chinese.

How long will it take to get myDNA results?

Your myDNA report will be sent to you via email within 3 weeks of processing. You may also view the results on the myDNA app. You may download the app from your Apple Store or Google Play.

How do I receive my myDNA results?

When your report is ready, an email will be sent to your registered email address, notifying you to access your report. You may then access the myDNA secure website to retrieve your report or view the results on the myDNA app. You may download the app from your Apple Store or Google Play.

Where will my DNA sample be analysed?

Your DNA sample will be analysed at our Prenetics laboratory in Hong Kong.

 

Because Prenetics owns and operates our own laboratory, your samples are never sent to a sub-contracted laboratory and never leave our sight. We handle the testing, interpretation and reporting on all samples from beginning to end. This means that we have control of all procedures and security.

Where is your laboratory?

Our lab is located in Quarry Bay, Hong Kong and is operated under stringent international quality standards.

We have had external validation completed by the Core Facilities-Genome Sequencing Laboratory (CFGSL) at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). Based on CFGSL’s external validation, our proven genotyping accuracy is 99.9%.

What happens to my DNA sample after the test?

After the analysis of your sample is complete, your sample is immediately disposed of in line with standard laboratory practices.

How is my personal information protected?

At Prenetics, we are committed to maintaining the security and confidentiality of your personal information. We have put security measures in place to help protect against the loss, misuse or alteration of information under our control. We use procedural, physical and electronic security methods designed to prevent people who aren’t authorized from getting access to this information. Our internal code of conduct adds additional privacy protection. In addition, our website and mobile app are encrypted with SSL using the latest technology standards.

 

Will the information I provide be shared with third parties?

We understand and respect the sensitive nature of the information you provide to us, and protecting your personal data is our commitment to you.

 

We will not sell, lease, or rent your individual-level information (i.e., information about a single individual’s genotypes) to any third party.

Will you share my information with my insurer/takaful provider? Could my results affect my insurance/takaful coverage?

We DO NOT share any of your genetic data or the results of your myDNA test with your insurer or any third party, even if they have paid for the test.

 

In addition, your results will have no effect on your insurance/takaful coverage now or in the future. By default, your insurer will not have access to any of the results of your test.
